“Here Thinking of There, Now Thinking of Then”
This work evolved from my ongoing curiosity about the phenomenon of remembering and forgetting. The imagery reflects the
confluence of memory and geography and of narratives both handed down or imagined.
I began this project in 2016 after spending time in coastal Normandy and Brittany, drawing a landscape that seems, to me, to
resonate with a deep sadness. The area is linked to recollections of three people who never knew one another; a new acquaintance,
a friend’s father, and my own father. During the Second World War, although they were separated by an ocean of geography,
psychology and time, parts of their personal histories are bound to this land.
Later, as I travelled through the villages of Brittany, I became aware of war memorials often inscribed with the phrase, "À tous les
enfants". The literal translation is, “To all the children”. In fact, this phrase refers to all citizens of a village who died as a result of war.
But the thought of the countless children who have been victims in countless wars remains with me and informs these recent pieces.
Shapes and marks in my work refer to a combination of landscapes of home and of France, of maps, military diagrams,
blockhouses/bunkers, cemeteries, flowers, and a French porcelain funerary wreath. Surfaces are built by layering, embedding,
scraping, and excavating color and line. The result is meant to provoke thought and act as a stimulus for further observations.
We carry memories in our hearts, in our minds, and in our bones, but long after we’ve forgotten the earth remembers.
